Description of Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Hispanic Linguistics aims to equip students with specific background, education, and tools in the study and teaching of the Spanish language, the most widely studied language other than English in the United States. Students will learn the historical development of the Spanish language, along with linguistic theory and analysis. The certificate program will also educate students in teaching methodologies and practices for Spanish-language instruction. Graduates will be able to conduct Spanish-language analysis. Upon completion, this professional qualification may expand a graduate student’s opportunities in the job markets, both academic and non-academic.
Target Audience
The target audience is Spanish-speaking, degree-seeking master’s and doctoral students in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia.
Time to Complete
The certificate program is available to already admitted, degree-seeking master’s and doctoral students in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Students enrolled in the certificate program will complete it in tandem with their graduate or doctoral degree. All certificate course requirements must be completed within the time it takes to complete the graduate or doctoral degree in which the student is enrolled.
Admission
All students must apply to the certificate program. The following admission requirements will apply to all interested graduate students:
- Applicants must contact the Director of the Linguistics program, Professor Eve Danziger(ed8c@virginia.edu), and the Spanish program's certificate advisor, Professor Omar Velázquez (ov7p@virginia.edu), to state their interest in the certificate;
- Applicants must already be in a graduate or doctoral degree program in the UVA College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences;
- A UVA graduate-level transcript showing the student is in good standing must be provided;
- The certificate advisor meets with the graduate student to determine Spanish-language competency, and to develop a coursework completion timeline.

Total number of credit hours: 12 credits
